Where Alberobello is
Alberobello sits in the Valle d'Itria, about an hour from Bari and Brindisi airports. Locorotondo, Martina Franca, Cisternino and Ostuni are short drives away; Matera is an easy day trip.
Why stay overnight in Alberobello?
Most people see Alberobello on a day trip from Bari or Polignano and leave by late afternoon. In the evening the lanes go quiet and the whitewashed cones light up. The trulli have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996, and the town has more of them in one place than anywhere else.
A night inside one is the best part: you sleep under a stone dome built without mortar, a building style found only in this corner of Puglia.
Our tip: Many trullo shops in Rione Monti let you up onto their roof terrace for a photo. It costs nothing, but buying a small souvenir is the polite thanks.

What is a night in a trullo really like?
The thick limestone walls keep a trullo cool in summer, so many get by without air conditioning. In winter they can feel cold and damp; ask about heating if you travel from November to March.
Windows are small and rooms can be dark. Doorways are low, and beds often sit in alcoves under the cone. Bathrooms and kitchens are usually in a modern extension.
Look at recent guest photos: a real trullo has round rooms and a conical ceiling inside. Some listings only have a trullo facade.
How do you get to Alberobello?
The nearest airports are Bari, about an hour by car, and Brindisi. Without a car, buses and the Ferrovie del Sud Est regional railway run from Bari; buses take about an hour, trains longer. Services are not frequent, so check the timetable before you go.
For the Valle d'Itria and the country trulli, rent a car: the small towns are 10 to 30 minutes apart by road.
