The short answer
- HikingCinque Terrea coastal path links all five villages
- Views & comfortAmalfi Coastcliffside hotels, terraces, boat trips
- Without a carCinque Terrea regional train stops in every village
- Combine withFlorence vs NaplesCinque Terre in the north, Amalfi near Pompeii and Capri
Where the two coasts are
About 600 km apart. The classic route: Cinque Terre, Florence, Rome, then the Amalfi Coast.
What is the difference between the two coasts?
The Amalfi Coast in Campania is a steep, about 50 km long stretch south of Naples, with larger towns like Positano, Amalfi and Ravello and a famous cliff road. Cinque Terre in Liguria is five small fishing villages within a national park, close together and linked by train and hiking trails. Both are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Our tip: On the Amalfi Coast, use the ferries instead of the coast road whenever you can: faster in summer and with the best view of the towns.

Bigger, more glamorous and more expensive. You stay for four or five nights, take boats to Capri, visit Pompeii and eat on terraces above the sea. Getting around is slow: one narrow coast road, crowded buses, expensive parking.
- spectacular views from terraces and hotels
- boat trips to Capri, day trip to Pompeii
- wide choice of restaurants and luxury hotels
- the Path of the Gods, one of Italy's most famous hikes
- expensive, especially Positano and Ravello
- slow, narrow coast road, crowded buses
Try here: Limoncello and delizia al limone, made with the coast's big Sfusato lemons.

- hiking trails right between the villages
- largely car-free, the train stops in every village
- easy to combine with Florence and Pisa
- very crowded during the day
- small rooms, little luxury
Try here: Trofie al pesto and fresh focaccia, the classics of Liguria.

Can you do both on one trip?
Yes, but plan a full travel day between them: by train it is roughly five to seven hours from La Spezia to Naples, often with a change in Rome or Florence. A classic order is Cinque Terre, then Florence and Tuscany, then Rome, then the Amalfi Coast.
When should you go?
For both: May, June and September. July and August are hot and crowded, and many hotels on the Amalfi Coast close from November to March.
